“Petrykivka”: Ukrainian: Петриківський розпис) is a traditional Ukrainian decorative painting style, originating from the village of Petrykivka in Dnipropetrovsk oblast of Ukraine, where it was traditionally used to decorate house walls and everyday household items. The earliest known examples of this style date from the 18th century, but it continues to thrive and develop as a modern art form.

The distinctive features of this folk art style are its flower patterns, distinctive brush techniques, and its traditionally white background. In 2012 the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine recognized Petrykivka painting as a part of the intangible cultural heritage of Ukraine, and it was included in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

The people of the village of Petrykivka decorate their living quarters, household belongings and musical instruments with a style of ornamental painting that is characterized by fantastic flowers and other natural elements, based on careful observation of the local flora and fauna.

This art is rich in symbolism: the rooster stands for fire and spiritual awakening, while birds represent light, harmony and happiness. In folk belief, the paintings protect people from sorrow and evil. Local people, and in particular women of all ages, are involved in this folk art tradition. Every family has at least one practitioner, making decorative painting an integral part of daily existence in the community. The painting traditions, including the symbolism of the ornamental elements, are transferred, renewed and enhanced from one generation to another.

Local schools at all levels, from pre-school to college, teach the fundamentals of Petrykivka decorative painting, with all children given the opportunity to study it. The community willingly teaches its skills and know-how to anyone who shows an interest. The tradition of decorative and applied arts contributes to the renewal of historical and spiritual memory and defines the identity of the entire community.

Africa is the world’s second-largest and second-most populous continent after Asia. At about 30.3 million km2 (11.7 million square miles) including adjacent islands, it covers 20% of Earth’s land area and 6% of its total surface area. With nearly 1.4 billion people, it accounts for about 18% of the world’s human population. Africa’s population is the youngest among all the continents. Average age in 2012 was 19.7, when the worldwide median age was 30.4. Based on 2024 projections, Africa’s population will reach 3.8 billion people by 2099.

Africa is the ‘cradle of humankind’. Fossils found in Africa, show that human beings and their closest relatives the gorilla and chimpanzees were born and evolved in Africa.

There are 54 countries in Africa today, according to the United Nations. Africa is the second largest continent in the world. Africa is home to the world’s largest desert and home of the world’s longest river: The Nile. Most of the world’s diamonds come from Africa (around 95% as well as 50% of the world’s gold) and it produces 70% of the world’s cocoa beans!

The continent has up to 90 percent of the world’s chromium and platinum. The largest reserves of cobalt, diamonds, platinum and uranium in the world are in Africa. It holds 65 per cent of the world’s arable land and ten percent of the planet’s internal renewable fresh water source.

Africa, the second-largest continent, is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean. It is divided in half almost equally by the Equator. The continent includes the islands of Cape Verde, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, and Comoros.

The number one reason for travelers visiting Africa is to embark on a wildlife safari or climb Kilimanjaro. While Africa certainly has some of the most extensive wildlife viewing opportunities and one of the seven summits, there are many other reasons to travel to Africa.

The Aegean Sea and Islands have been shaped by the sun, the sea and the invigorating winds. The local culinary traditions date back to ancient times and they are an intrinsic part of the Aegean Culture. Savour boiled greens picked from the mountains, sprinkled with olive oil and lemon juice as a side dish to your grilled meat or fish dish. A large variety of aromatic plants and herbs, such as oregano, savory, marjoram and thyme flavour marinades and stews cooked in lemon sauce. Capers and crithmum (rock samphire) are two wild plants that thrive by the seashore and they make some excellent appetizers to enjoy with your tsipouro drink.

Fresh Fish & Seafood Appetizers

Fish can be cooked in various ways as long as you use your imagination… and in this department Greeks fare well. Small or medium sized fish are floured and fried in sizzling olive oil which turns them into crispy treats, sometimes served along with a tasty sourish marinade-sauce called ‘savoro’. To make this sauce locals use olive oil, quality vinegar, rosemary, and oregano – it’s the standard recipe on most of the islands.

On Tinos Island people add petimezi (grape molasses) to their food, which lends their creations a particular flavour. Other dishes you’ll love are: red mullets with a barley rusk crust on Mytilini, Lesvos Island; oven-baked fish with sesame paste (tachini) on Rhodes Island; chub mackerel with capers; grouper stew with onions; kakavia soup (made with rockfish); picarel omelette on Santorini and Syros Islands; a fish pie made with Mediterranean sand smelt on Kimolos Island; stuffed squid with rice or feta cheese, cuttlefish with fennel and olives, to name but a few…

Make sure you also taste some special mezedes (meaning titbits) with your tsipouro or ouzo drink, such as salt-cured sardines from Mytilini, grilled sun-dried chub mackerel (gouna) from Paros Island, a salad with herring roe from Syros Island, marinated anchovies and salt-cured tuna.

Shellfish

Delicious summer teasers!

With the thousands dispersed islands, the deep blue clear seas, and the innumerable leeward bays, Greece is the ideal place for hundreds of shelfish to be found in abundance. Hundreds of species of shellfish reside in the Greek seas. No matter what the geographical variation of their names is, they keep the aromas of the sea well enclosed in their tiny bodies.

Mussels, with their black lustrous colour and the hair between the two shells, are usually attached on rocks in shallow waters. Oysters are stunning like scarlet gems with an iodine scent. Scallops are well-known for their brackish taste and their tender heart well protected by the hard shell.

Pen shells stand on the bottom of the sea – sometimes ajar- on the alert for capturing their food; their allies are two little shrimps that bite their tender parts whenever there is enemy at the gates. With a taste reminiscent of oyster, there are the red and sharp arca shells. Thorny sea urchins encompass gold and red eggs. Sea figs resemble hairy stones in a dark khaki tone. Clams shine in their brownish shell which keeps their skin juicy and delicious.

The sea on your table

Raw or cooked, shellfish reach the top of their taste potential when served with lemon. Here are our suggestions:

Mussels: hot with just a drop of olive oil; fried with feta, oregano and other spices; in souvlaki; in a mussel pilaf.
Clams, oysters, sea figs and arca shells are best when eaten raw with lemon.
Pen shells: when fried they taste like crabs.
Sea urchins provide irresistible delicious salads with a strong sea aroma.
Scallops are wonderful whether grilled, fried, or cooked with pasta on a tomato sauce.

Diving into omega-3’s

Rich in polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids, shellfish armour health as they prevent from heart diseases and hypertension, they reduce the effects of diabetes, and they stimulate your libido. What is more, they contain proteins, calcium, phosphorous, iodine, and low-calorie carbohydrates.

Tips for shellfish lovers

Opening a shellfish is a small adventure. The easiest way is to put a knife at the slit between the two shells and twist it softly. Then detach the skin. When it comes to sea urchins, use a knife to open its mouth.

History

After the death of Nikola Tesla, an American court, in January 1943, awarded custody of his property to Sava Kosanović. the son of Tesla’s youngest sister Marica. Sava Kosanović was a Serbian politician, publicist and diplomat who, at that time, was living in New York as a member of the Royal Yugoslav Government-in-exile.

Following his death, Tesla’s entire property was packed, sealed and handed over to the Office of Alien Property Custodian. His belongings were transferred from the New Yorker Hotel to the Manhattan Warehouse and Storage Co. where some of Tesla’s property was already stored.

On the initiative of Sava Kosanović, all Nikola Tesla’s personal property and writings were shipped to Belgrade, where Kosanović subsequently presented them to the state. Packed in sixty packages, suitcases, metal trunks and barrels, the legacy of Nikola Tesla arrived on the ship Serbia in the port of Rijeka in September, 1951. The material was then transferred by train to Belgrade, where it was stored in the Belgrade University Faculty of Electrical Engineering. In June, 1952, it was moved from the Faculty to the Genčić Villa at 51 Proleterskih Brigada, as the street was then known. That address is now the Museum.

On the basis of Article 80, Paragraph 2, of the Yugoslav Constitution, and at the proposal of the Government Council for Science and Culture, the Yugoslav Government, on December 5, 1952, resolved to establish the Nikola Tesla Museum. This resolution was signed by Josip “Tito” Broz, and published in the Official Gazette no. 59, on December 10 that year. The same year, Veljko Korać, a professor of the Belgrade University Faculty of Philosophy, was appointed the founding director.

The Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade was opened to the public on October 20, 1955. It was the first technical museum in Yugoslavia. The opening presented the permanent exhibition, which gave visitors the opportunity to see models built accurately according to Tesla’s drawings.

The museological work of the Nikola Tesla Museum may be seen as beginning in 1957, when the urn received by the Museum went on display as a permanent exhibit. On October 9, 1969, the city of Belgrade took over the founding rights, based on the agreement concluded between the city of Belgrade and the Federation. On May 21, 2020, at the proposal of the Ministry of Culture and Information, the Government of the Republic of Serbia adopted the Decision on taking over the founding rights of the Nikola Tesla Museum (number 022-3929/2020). The City of Belgrade transferred all founding rights, obligations and responsibilities to the Republic of Serbia free of charge, and the Nikola Tesla Museum received the status of a republican cultural institution.

The museological work of the Nikola Tesla Museum may be seen as beginning in 1957, when the urn received by the Museum went on display as a The Nikola Tesla Museum is today, by any criteria, a scientific and cultural institution which is unique in Serbia and the world. It is the only museum preserving the original and personal legacy of Nikola Tesla. Its holdings include the following exceptionally valuable collections:

More than 1,500 photographs and glass photographic plates of original technical items, instruments and devices
More than 1,000 plans and drawings.

Acropolis of Athens !!

The Acropolis of Athens and its monuments are universal symbols of the classical spirit and civilization and form the greatest architectural and artistic complex bequeathed by Greek Antiquity to the world.

In the second half of the fifth century bc, Athens, following the victory against the Persians and the establishment of democracy, took a leading position amongst the other city-states of the ancient world.

In the age that followed, as thought and art flourished, an exceptional group of artists put into effect the ambitious plans of Athenian statesman Pericles and, under the inspired guidance of the sculptor Pheidias, transformed the rocky hill into a unique monument of thought and the arts.

The most important monuments were built during that time: the Parthenon, built by Ictinus, the Erechtheon, the Propylaea, the monumental entrance to the Acropolis, designed by Mnesicles and the small temple Athena Nike.

Outstanding Universal Value

The Acropolis of Athens is the most striking and complete ancient Greek monumental complex still existing in our times.

It is situated on a hill of average height (156m) that rises in the basin of Athens. Its overall dimensions are approximately 170 by 350m. The hill is rocky and steep on all sides except for the western side, and has an extensive, nearly flat top.

Strong fortification walls have surrounded the summit of the Acropolis for more than 3,300 years. The first fortification wall was built during the 13th century BC, and surrounded the residence of the local Mycenaean ruler. In the 8th century BC, the Acropolis gradually acquired a religious character with the establishment of the cult of Athena, the city’s patron goddess.

The sanctuary reached its peak in the archaic period (mid-6th century to early 5th century BC). In the 5th century BC, the Athenians, empowered from their victory over the Persians, carried out an ambitious building programme under the leadership of the great statesman Perikles, comprising a large number of monuments including the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Propylaia and the temple of Athena Nike.

The monuments were developed by an exceptional group of architects (such as Iktinos, Kallikrates, Mnesikles) and sculptors (such as Pheidias, Alkamenes, Agorakritos), who transformed the rocky hill into a unique complex, which heralded the emergence of classical Greek thought and art.

On this hill were born Democracy, Philosophy, Theatre, Freedom of Expression and Speech, which provide to this day the intellectual and spiritual foundation for the contemporary world and its values.

The Acropolis’ monuments, having survived for almost twenty-five centuries through wars, explosions, bombardments, fires, earthquakes, sackings, interventions and alterations, have adapted to different uses and the civilizations, myths and religions that flourished in Greece through time.
